Bloomsburg Shuts Down Bryant in Season Opener
Box Score
SMITHFIELD, RI - The Bloomsburg University Field Hockey team opened up their 2006 season in dominating fashion, cruising to a 4-0 win over Bryant on a rainy Saturday afternoon. Samantha Kropa (Tunkhannock/ Lackawanna Trail) had two goals and Maribeth Brozena (Larksville/ Wyoming Valley West) had a goal and an assist to lead the Huskies.
Bloomsburg opened up the scoring in the 25th minute when Ashley Heckard (Millerstown/ Greenwood) set up Brozena off of a corner to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead going into halftime.
Early in the second half, Brozena then set up freshman Chelsea Due (Pen Argyl/ Pen Argyl) off another corner to make it 2-0. The goal was the first of Due's collegiate career.
Kropa would then add two more insurance goals to give the Huskies a 4-0 lead with 10 minutes remaining in the game. That proved to be more than enough for, two-time All-American goalie, Tracey Hudak (Sweet Valley/ Lake-Lehman) who stopped all seven shots she faced.
Bloomsburg, 1-0, will open up their conference schedule on Wednesday when they travel to Slippery Rock at 4 p.m.
